Architecture Discovery Camp – Site Tour

On Wednesday, July 9th, the Wooten|Sundt construction joint venture at Las Cruces High School hosted some young visitors from Dona Ana Community College’s Architecture Discovery Camp (ADC). Organized by DACC’s Professor Luis Rios, the tour was part of the two-week summer architecture camp for middle- and high-schoolers.

Middle- and high-schoolers from Dona Ana Community College’s Architectural Discovery Camp visit the Wooten-Sundt jobsite at Las Cruces High School on July 9th, 2014.

Around twenty students, garbed in safety vests, hard hats, and eye protection, followed Project Superintendent Brian Higgins of Sundt Construction through a site walk as he and Project Architect Myles Kraenzel, of Alley & Associates, explained the architectural and logistical aspects of the project. Project Engineer Art Gonzalez and Engineering Intern Reed Hubbell of Sundt Construction also assisted, helping with street crossings and specific questions.

The current work represents Phase I of the Las Cruces High School Additions & Remodeling project, which will include four new buildings and a significant increase in parking lot capacity. The new buildings will include classrooms, science labs, an auditorium, and counseling and administrative facilities, in addition to Las Cruces’ first “sky bridge”.

The fully enclosed pedestrian bridge was of particular interest during the tour, as its framework is slated to be erected on Friday, July 11th. The bridge will serve to join the existing LCHS campus with its eastern expansion, providing greatly increased parking capacity, new classrooms, and safe passage over El Paseo Road for the high school’s students. Mr. Higgins discussed the nuances of the bridge assembly with the students, in addition to pointing out key aspects of safety awareness common on a construction site. The tour ended with a viewing of the project model displayed in the existing campus’ reception area, as Mr. Kraenzel explained some aspects of the project’s architecture in greater depth.

The students were well-behaved and respectful, and Wooten|Sundt would like to thank them and the DACC staff for their help in ensuring a safe, educational site tour.
